Kwaidan, a collection of ghost stories, was published by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) in 1904. This exhibition showcases prints and photographs by 40 Irish and Japanese artists, each offering their own interpretation of Hearn’s eerie tales. Through the mediums of print and photography, they have attempted to express the preciousness, horror and inevitability of death as depicted in each tale of Hearn’s ghost stories. The artists have created unique works of art with surprising techniques and interpretations of these strange and ethereal tales. This exhibition aims to celebrate Hearn’s literary legacy, strengthen the cultural ties he forged between Japan and Ireland, and promote cultural exchange through contemporary works.
Organised by Blue Moon Projects, a group of Irish artists including Stephen Lawlor, Kate McDonagh, and Ed Miliano, the exhibition will be held at the University of Toyama Central Library, which graciously extended an invitation to host the event.
The University of Toyama Library is celebrating the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Lafcadio Hearn Library (formerly the collection of books by Lafcadio Hearn). To commemorate this, we will be holding an exhibition of materials and panels from the Hearn Library at the same time, so please take a look at it along with the art exhibition.
The Lafcadio Hearn Library
The Lafcadio Hearn Library at the University of Toyama is a book collection that had been privately owned by Lafcadio Hearn (1850～1904 : who became a naturalized Japanese citizen under the name Koizumi Yakumo). The library contains 2,069 foreign books, 364 Japanese books, and handwritten manuscripts of Japan: An Attempt at Interpretation composed of two volumes and 1,200 leaves. Many of the 1,350 English and 719 French books were collected during Hearn’s time in Japan, with some acquired earlier during his stay in Cincinnati and New Orleans, where he worked as a struggling journalist. The Japanese books were the origins of his literary creation through the storytelling of his wife Setsu. Most of the Japanese books are Japanese style woodprint books.
The Lafcadio Hearn Library is open to the public on the third Wednesday of every month, with volunteer guides available to offer tours. Visitors are warmly encouraged to explore this remarkable collection.

『怪 談 』は 、1 9 0 4 年 に パ トリッ ク・ラ フ カ ディ オ・ ハーン (1850-1904)によって出版されました。本展は、ハーンの『怪談』にインスパイアされたアイルランドと日本を拠点とする40名のアーティストが、それぞれに解釈を試みた版画と写真による美術展です。彼らは、「版画」と「写真」という媒 体を通して『怪談』の各話に描かれている死の尊さ、恐怖、不可 避性などを表現しようと試みました。この奇妙で幽玄な物語を驚くような技法と解釈で、個性的な作品を生み出しました。この展覧会を通して、ハーン文学を讃えるとともに、彼が日本とアイルラ ンドの間に築いた文化的な絆をより強くし、現代アートの作品を 通じて文化交流が促進することを期待しています。
この企画は、スティーブン・ローラー、ケイト・マクドナー、エド・ミリアーノをはじめとするアイルランド人アーティストによって結成されたワーキンググループ「ブルー・ムーン・プロジェクツ」が主催し、主催者からのオファーを受けて富山大学附属図書館中央図書館で開催するものです。
富山大学附属図書館は、ちょうどヘルン文庫設置（旧ラフカディオ・ハーンの蔵書）から１００周年を迎えます。これを記念し、ヘルン文庫の資料・パネル展示も同時開催しますので、美術展と併せてご覧ください。
富山大学附属図書館中央図書館で所蔵するヘルン文庫は、ラフカディオ・ハーン（Lafcadio Hearn, 1850～1904 ：日本に帰化して小泉八雲と称した。）の旧蔵書で、洋書2,069冊、和漢書364冊及び「日本：一つの解明」（「神國日本」）の手書き原稿上下2冊1,200枚からなっています。
洋書のうち1,350冊が英語、719冊がフランス語の書物であり、これらの大部分はハーンが日本へ来てから集めたもののようですが、中には彼がアメリカのシンシナティやニューオリンズ滞在中、貧しい記者生活のなかから買い求めたと思われるものもあります。
和漢書はセツ夫人の説明を通して、ハーンの文学的創作の資料となったものであって、大半は木版刷りの和本です。
また、ヘルン文庫は、毎月第三水曜日に一般公開しています。市民ボランティアの方によるガイドも行っていますので、お気軽にお越しください。
