Artist Statement
I sometimes create folding screens by taking apart and reassembling used screens. The aged letters on the screens, which are often difficult for us to decipher today, have a haunting quality to them, resembling incantations to exorcise evil spirits. Using some hundred year old letters given to me by Yanagisawa Gallery, I painted ‘Hoichi the Earless’, who comes and goes between this world and the other world.
アーティストの声明
時々屏風を作ることがある。中古の屏風を見つけては解体し、また組み立てる。現代の我々には読みにくい昔の文字は、悪霊を封じる呪文のようにも見えて不気味だ。柳沢画廊からいただいた約100年前の文字を貼り合わせ、その上にこの世とあの世を行き来する「耳のない芳一」を描いた。
