ラフカディオ・ハーンの「雪女」に寄せて
Artist Statement
As I was drawing, I was reminded of the words of the Japanese printmaker Munakata Shiko, who was born in Aomori prefecture in the Tohoku region. He once said, “Snow is warm.” These words made me think about how Lafcadio Hearn felt about the snow in Japan. ‘Yuki-onna’, death in the night of a blizzard, and life sprouting in spring—Minokichi met both beautiful Yuki-onna and Flora.
アーティストの声明
描いていて、日本の版画家・棟方志功の「雪は温かいのです」という言葉を思い出していた。棟方は日本の東北、青森県の人だった。小泉八雲が日本の雪に何を感じたのかを考える。「雪女」、吹雪の夜の死、春の萌えたつ命。巳之吉は美しい雪女とフローラに出会った。
