Artist Statement
Mujina are mischievous tricksters who enjoy frightening humans. Their antics were popular subjects in stories old people told us around the summer bonfire when I was a child in Japan. On reading Kwaidan again this story felt personally familiar, and I thought an ukiyo-e style image would suit it perfectly.
アーティストの声明
ムジナとは、人間を騙して怖がらせるいたずら好きな妖怪のこと。日本にいた子どもの頃、夏に焚き火を囲みながら年配の方々が色々な物語を語ってくれたが、そのなかでもムジナの滑稽な行動は人気のあるお話だった。『怪談』を読み返すと、この物語が個人的に身近に感じられた。浮世絵のようなイメージがぴったりだと考えて制作した。
