ラフカディオ・ハーンの「雪女」に寄せて
Artist Statement
‘Yuki-onna’ has a wonderful twist at the ending. The woodcutter’s wife is a spirit. Hearn gives us a complex story so briefly. Kobayashi’s film version has a haunting end scene. Yuki-onna glides back into the forest from whence she came with a gigantic eye superimposed on the background signifying her ever watchful presence for the remainder of the woodcutter’s life.

「雪女」のエンディングには、木こりの妻は実は霊であったという素晴らしい展開が待っている。ハーンは複雑な物語をきわめて簡潔に表現しているが、小林(正樹)監督の映画版にも、心に残るラストシーンがある。雪女は森へと静かに戻っていき、その背景には巨大な眼が重なる。それは、彼女が木こりの残りの人生を常に見守っているということを意味しているのだ。
